John Schembri has been involved in Archery since the Archery Association of Malta was founded way back in 1970, he is currently the president.Over the past 52 years he has covered several roles within the association, including secretary, national coach and president.
Apart from covering several administrative roles, he is also heavily involved in the day-to-day running of the association which include mentoring, coaching and tuning bows on a regular basis.John was also an active archer and still has several records in his name in the longbow category.
Michelle Abela started archery in her teens at 15 years of age.She had a long 20 year break and restarted in 2018. Michelle shoots an Olympic Recurve bow in the Recurve Division.
Michelle has formed part of the Archery National team since October 1998 and has represented Malta in various International competitions including winning the gold medal at the MESSKIRCH Archery Indoor Competition. She holds nearly all the Recurve Women National records both Indoor and Outdoor.
Michelle Abela works at the Central Bank of Malta as an Operational Risk Officer. She is married to fellow archer George Abela and has a 20 year old daughter Elisa Marie.
Brian Micallef commenced his sports adventure by playing Hockey at the age of 13. He played for Sliema and the National team till the age of 35. Due to an injury, he had to stop practicing this sport and moved to Archery at the age of 40.
Brian shoots a compound bow and competes in both Senior and master’s categories.Brian forms part of the Archery National Team and has represented Malta in various International indoor and outdoor tournaments (Cyprus / Messkirch Germany / Basel Switzerland)Brian works as a Senior Sales Executive in a leading Shipping Company CMA CGM Malta Agency Limited.
Daniel has been involved in archery since a young age, winning several local championships in the junior recurve category. After a long break he took up the sport once again in 2012 within the recurve division, then in 2015 he transitioned to the compound division.
In the compound division he won the national championships (indoor and outdoor) several times, he also represented Malta in various international competitions, winning the silver (2018) and bronze (2021) medals in the team event competition in the Aphrodite International Tournament held in Cyprus.He currently holds the national records in the Compound Men division on the 50m distance and the WA 50m. Daniel is also involved in coaching in the beginners category.Daniel is employed with a local bank as a supervisor.
Jeremy started archery in 2012 and competed with an Olympic recurve bow had his first international experience in 2016 which was in the UK, but has also competed Cyprus, Germany and Switzerland. Olympic recurve archery allowed him to develop several aspects of the sport such as technique and understanding equipment tuning. He currently holds 10 national records in the cadet and junior categories for the Olympic recurve category. Jeremy is also a certified WA level 1 coach and has helped several beginners start their archery journey. In October 2022, he decided to make the change to the compound category because he wanted to experience archery in a new style. In January 2023, Jeremy won the National indoor championships with a compound bow which incentivised him to train even harder to improve! In 2023, he also forms part of the Association’s council as the Public Relations Officer as he would like to promote our sport and show what we as an Association do in terms of activities and events.
On a personal level, Jeremy would like to encourage everyone to start archery because members practice, train and compete Nationally and Internationally and make great friends along the way!
